Textbook: You do not need a textbook if you purchase a copy of WebAssign containing an electronic textbook.

“Algebra and Trigonometry”, Ninth Edition with WebAssign,  by Larson.

     Publisher: Brooks/Cole

If you have a used book you may purchase a stand alone copy of WebAssign.

Materials:  It is suggested to have two colors of writing utensils for note taking in class.  A scientific calculator is also required (one able to calculate log x and ln x).

Course Outcomes:  This course is designed to prepare students for calculus, physics, and related technical subjects. Topics include an intensive study of algebraic and transcendental functions accompanied by analytic geometry.

After successful completion the student should:

  1. Understand the basic principles of right angle trigonometry and be able to use them in solving problems.
  2. Understand the basic principles and operations of vectors and vector analysis.
  3. Solve applications involving analytic geometry.

Prerequisites: MATH 1111 or departmental permission. A grade of "C" or better is required for graduation if course is used in Area A or Area F. 4-0-4

Departmental Attendance Policy:

When you have more than two week's worth of unexcused absences (one week in the summer), you may be administratively withdrawn from the course, which may have a negative impact on graduating on time, financial aid, Hope, etc.  See the student handbook for more information.

Homework:  Homework will be assigned using WebAssign, which can be found at www.webassign.com.  You will need to buy an access code (available in the bookstore) in order to use the software and you will need to enter a class key to get the assignments. You can enroll in WebAssign and purchase your license later.  You must have your license purchased by June 15

Class key for WebAssign is sgsc 9207 5235

Grading: You will be given four in-class exams and a final exam.  Exams are closed book.  Calculators are allowed on exams, but all work must be shown.  If you use a calculator to solve a problem you must write down the expression that you enter into the calculator.

Each in-class exam is worth 15% of your grade and the final exam is worth 30% of your grade.  Homework will account for 10% of your grade.  Grading will be on a ten-point scale.

Test Make-ups:  Make-ups will be available for the first three in-class tests.  Make-ups must be completed before graded tests are returned to the class.  To qualify for a make-up you must be up to date with your homework, meaning all due assignments are completed with an average grade of at least 80%.  If you miss a test and do not make it up your grade for that test will be the same as your final exam grade.  There will be no make-ups for the fourth test.

Academic Support Center: Free peer-tutoring is offered at this center, located in Powell Hall, room 216.  Hours of operation are established after classes begin.  Watch out for times being posted on the various notice boards around campus.

STEM Center:

The STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Center is located in Stubbs 125 and is open Monday-Thursday from 8AM to 4:30PM. The STEM Center is a resource center that fosters independent learning to help students achieve their academic goals. Resources include, but are not limited to: Laptops, desktop computers, SAT/ACT practice tests, CLEP practice tests, NCLEX practices tests, PCAT practice tests, study packets for your classes (upon request), free calculator rental, study groups, textbooks, scantrons, coffee and much more! Any question is welcome in the STEM Center!

Hardship Withdrawals:   Hardship withdrawals are granted only when a student has a legitimate hardship related to illness, disabling activities, etc.  They cannot be granted for academic reasons.  An unsatisfactory grade is not justification for hardship withdrawal.  See the SGSC College Catalog for details.

Access Statement:

If you have a disability and require reasonable classroom accommodations, please see me after class or make an appointment during office hours. If you plan to request accommodations for a disability, please register with the Office of Disability Services in Room 118, Powell Hall, phone number 912-260-4435.  Also, if you find that any content in this course is inaccessible because of your disability, please contact me as soon as possible.

Academic Dishonesty: Academic integrity is expected.  Make sure you familiarize with what constitutes academic dishonesty and its consequences as outlined in the student handbook. In particular allowing another student to copy your work is an example of academic dishonesty.  Any work that is not your own will be given a grade of zero.
