Unit 7 Waycross
College CHEM
2401K
GENERAL OBJECTIVES
The learner
will demonstrate a knowledge of the alkenes including structures, and
preparations.
SPECIFIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The learner will:
1.
draw a structure of ethylene, explain sp2
hybridization, locate σ and
Π
bonds in ethylene.
2.
name and draw structures of different alkenes.
3.
draw cis- and trans-
isomers of different alkenes (and indicate which one is E or Z).
4. understand,
explain and draw the mechanisms involved in the dehydrohalogenation
of alkyl halides.
5.
list the ease of dehydrohalogenation
of primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols and to recognize the proper
products of this type of reaction.
6.
understand, explain, and draw the mechanisms
involved in dehydration of alcohols.
7.
write equations for and understand mechanisms
involved in the dehalogenation of vicinal dihalides.
8. be familiar with the physical
properties of alkenes.
9. be familiar with the stability of
alkenes and cycloalkenes
10. be familiar with the use of alkenes
in industry.
LEARNING GUIDE:
1. Read
chapter 7 in Organic Chemistry by Wade (7th edition)
2. Do
the following exercises: 31, 32, 36, 38, 44
