Stereochemistry

SPECIFIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The learner will:

1.  define sterioisomers.

2.  recognize optical activity.

3.  predict and distinguish as to what enantiomers are.

4.  find a chiral carbon atom within a molecule.

5.  recognize molecules that are chiral.

6.  be familiar with the different representations of three dimensional molecules.

7.  describe a racemic mixture (modification).

8. be familiar with the sequence rules for determining whether a specific configuration about a carbon atom is R or S.

9. recognize meso structures and define a meso compound.

10. know the reactions involving strioisomers including:

a. generation of a chiral center;

b. reactions of chiral molecules (bond-breaking, generation of

   second chiral center, resolution ).

LEARNING GUIDE

1. Read chapter 5 in Organic chemistry by Wade (7th edition)

2. Do the following exercises : 26, 30, 31, 35
