Organic Chemistry I                           Waycross College                               Chapter 4

                                     The Study of Chemical Reactions

                                                         Objectives

1. Explain the mechanism for the free radical halogenation of methane and other alkanes.

2. Based on rules of selection, predict the product of halogenation of an alkane.

3. Know what is meant by free energy and enthalpy.

4. Know the difference between endothermic and exothermic reactions.

5. Know the two kinds of bond dissociation (homolytic and heterolytic).

6. Know what is meant by kinetic and rate of reactions.

7. Be able to write a rate equation and know what is meant by order.

8. Know about activation energy, transition state, and rate determining steps.

9. Be able to show activation energy and transition state on an energy diagram.

10. Determine if a transition state will be product like or reactant like.

11. Describe the structure of carbocations, carbanions, free radicals and carbenes and their stabilities.

12. Explain the different steps of a chain reaction.
