                                  Structure and Stereochemistry of Alkanes

                                                          Objectives

 

1. Correctly name alkanes, cycloalkanes and substituted alkanes.

 

2. Explain the trends in melting point and boiling points of alkanes.

 

3. Be able to draw the molecular formula from the name of the alkane.

 

4. Be able to write the newman projection for different alkanes.

 

5. Know the difference between staggered and eclipsed conformation of ethane and stability.

 

6. Know the difference between anti, gauche and eclipsed conformations of propane and stability

 

7. Know the different conformation of butane and their stability.

 

8. Know the difference between cis and trans isomers in cycloalkanes.

 

9. Compare the stabilities of cycloalkanes (3C to 6C)

 

10. Be able to draw the two chair and boat conformations of cyclohexane.

 

11. Draw chair conformations and label equatorial and axial positions.

 

12. Be familiar with the reactions of alkanes including combustion and halogenation.
