Structure and Properties of Organic Molecules

 

1. Know how to write electron configuration for elements from hydrogen to chlorine.

 

2. Define sigma and pi bonds and know how many of each is found in single, double and triple bonds.

 

3. Know the shapes of sigma and pi bonds.

 

4. Know about sp, sp2, sp3 hybridization and their geometries.

 

5. Be familiar with different kinds of intra-molecular forces (hydrogen bonds, London forces and dipole-dipole moments)

 

6. Know the effect of intra-molecular forces on solubility.

 

7. Know the general structure of alkanes, cycloalkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and aromatic compounds.

 

8. Know the structure of functional groups including alcohols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and amines.
