After study, the student will be able to:

 

1. discuss

a. ionic and covalent bonds, and

b. why some compounds form ionic bonds and covalent bonds.

 

2. discuss

a. electronegativity and polarity and how they affect melting points, boiling points and solubility of compounds.

 

3. discuss

a. Bronsted-Lowry and Lewis acids and bases;

b. factors that affect the strength of acids and bases

 

4. Know

a. how to draw Lewis structures

b. How to write resonance forms of compounds

c. About multiple bonds and concepts of saturation and unsaturation.

d. How to calculate the formal charge

e. calculate empirical and molecular formulas

 

Learning Activity:

 

1. Read Chapter 1 in Wade (7th edition)

 

2. Do the following problems: 21, 23, 25, 33, 38, 42, 45, 51a, 52a.
