Alkynes

SPECIFIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

The learner will

1. draw a structure of acetylene, explain sp hybridization, and locate sigma and pi bonds in acetylene.

2. give the IUPAC name and draw structures of the alkynes.

3. write preparation of alkynes such as dehydrohalogenation of alkyl dihalides, reaction of metal (sodium) acetylides with primary alkyl halides.

4. write reaction and mechanisms of alkynes such as addition of hydrogen, addition of halogen, addition of hydrogen halide, addition of water, and formation of metal acetylides.

5. understand keto-enol tautomerism.

6. write a mechanism involving the chemical reaction of a metal alkylide (such as acetylide).

7. know the methods of qualitative analysis (identification) of alkynes.
