General Objectives for Biomolecules: Carbohydrates

 

After study, the student will

 

1.      Be able to classify carbohydrates as monosaccharides, disaccharides or polysaccharides

2.      Be able to draw monosaccharides in Fischer projection.

3.      Be able to classify carbohydrates as D or L

4.      Be able to determine the number of isomers based on chiral carbons.

5.      Know the differences between aldoses and ketoses

6.      Know the different reactions of monosaccharides including ester and alcohol formation, oxidation.

7.      Give different examples of disaccharides and polysaccharides.

8.      Know what are glycoproteins and lipoproteins and their functions.
